✏️ You’d love to draw, have zero clue where to start, and get lost in the ocean of YouTube tutorials.
✏️ You’ve always said, “I’m not creative” or “I can only do stick figures,” but secretly wish that wasn’t true.
✏️ You’ve dabbled here and there, but it never stuck.
✏️ You’ve tried drawing classes before, but they felt too advanced, assumed you knew more than you did, or left you feeling behind before you even started.
✏️ You miss doing something just for fun. You want a little joy injection.
✏️You used to draw…and then you didn’t. Maybe told yourself you didn’t have time. Maybe you’re still waiting for “permission” to begin again.
Sound like you? Not all those things all at once, but some combination that’s creating a barrier between you desire to draw, and you actually picking up a pencil and drawing (and maybe it’s helpful for you to know that up until recently this sounded like me too!)
This 5-Day Drawing Challenge is designed for people just like you: people who are curious, hesitant, and convinced they “can’t draw.”
Hi, I’m Jane!
I haven’t been a life-long drawer. Truth be known, if you had told me a couple of years back that I would be offering a drawing challenge like this, I would have made a loud snorting sound out of my nose.
Writing? Yes. A healthy, somewhat envious appreciation of the visual arts? Most definitely. But drawing? I had the vision in my head but translating it onto paper felt both frustrating and impossible.
As someone whose work now leans on drawing and painting heavily (wild I tell you!), it was only 18 months or so ago that I believed I wasn’t someone who could draw. I can’t tell you the exact moment that this shifted, but what I do know is that it was in part precipitated by a book I wanted to write and a vaguely hairbrained desire that came about to illustrate it myself (again, don’t ask me why this thought even occurred **gestures to the heavens**).
At first- somewhat predictably- things didn’t go that well. My drawings looked flat and my enthusiasm started to feel similar.
Then something shifted.
During a really difficult period in my life, I picked up a few books about art, and motivated by what I read, I started drawing patterns. Simple things really, but satisfying all the same.
My pattern drawing started to train my eye and hand together- I began to see differently. Shapes and shades began to make more sense. I practiced and practiced. Recently, I’ve noticed a basic sketch that used to take me ages I can now do in a relatively short period of time. Speed was never the point, but the realization delighted me. I was getting…. better.
Drawing also unlocked for me what is turning into one of my favourite loves: illustrated essays.
It’s changed my story telling (and truthfully, my life). I’ve played within a variety of different mediums and have settled on a rhythm.
But beyond that, the last couple of years drawing has become my soul food. At one point, such was the strain, that my access to words that I had previously relied on felt like they left me. And when they did, drawing found me.
But this workshop is not about the therapeutic aspects of creating (that part will reveal itself in time). It’s to show you how I got started, and to help you, should you have a similar desire, begin also.
Delicious things such as drawing after all, we should never keep solely to ourselves.
And the funny thing is- with a little guidance and practice- you just might surprise yourself.
I know I did.
You can take the challenge anytime you wish, and you have lifetime access to the lessons.
Each day we’ll explore a different foundation of drawing in a simple, gentle, and low-pressure way.
Day 1: Patterns – Learn how to find rhythm and flow with simple marks.
Day 2: Contours – (Re)training your eyes to draw things as they actually are (rather than what you think they are- there is a difference!)
Day 3: Shapes – Looking at the big picture
Day 4: Shading – Add depth and dimension to your work.
Day 5: Angles & Assembly – Understanding relationships and bringing everything together.
This isn’t about talent. It’s about trust, curiosity, and a tiny bit of courage.
Nope. This is literally for people who think they can’t draw at all. Like, really.
Just a pencil and some paper. That’s it.*
